El Movimiento, the Chicano Civil Rights Movement, was born within the Civil Rights Movement which took place in the United States in the 1960s. The passing of the Bilingual Education Act (1974) was a turning point for Chicano/a children since bilingual programs were introduced in schools, and it also brought about the publication of bilingual books dealing with relevant issues for Chicano children, especially the exposure to languages and contexts different from the prevalent Anglophone culture. From that moment, and especially during the 1980s and the 1990s with the rise of Multiculturalism in the publishing industry, for Chicano/a authors of children’s books it has been important to provide Chicano/a children with representations of their identity and culture through their books, so that bilingual and immigrant children could see their reality reflected in the books they read both in the language they were taught at school, English, and the language many of them spoke at home, Spanish. My proposal aims at analyzing some of the picturebooks created by these Chicano authors, most of them linked to the world of education, to explore how through their work they show that their experience is dynamic, diverse, and complex. Within the framework of the Critical Multicultural Analysis, I analyze how through their verbal and visual representations, these authors transform their borders into places of contact and empathy in order to make their linguistic and cultural reality visible.

Keywords

libros ilustrados, bilingüismo, infancia chicana, identidad de frontera, picturebooks, bilingualism, Chicanx childhood, border identity

</details>

Tornar

[133493
137987
post-5087","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-publicacions","tag-137987
["GET
